Each November, you may have noticed men proudly sporting their own unique version of facial fur. This may be due, in part, to the colder temperatures, baseball superstition, or the growing tradition of Movember -- the international charity where men grow facial hair, in November, to raise awareness and money for men’s health issues.
Whatever the reason, men’s daily shaving and hair care rituals can expose them to harsh chemicals lurking within the growing number of products on the market made to meet the needs presented by the most recent facial hair fads. This makes it all the more important to spread awareness about the use of natural and safe ingredients – especially during Movember.
So, this month, we’re offering some of our favorite natural skincare tips to help you or your best “Mo Bro” kick off his month-long journey of growing and grooming.
Start with a clean shave. The last shave before kicking off substantial hair growth should be a good one. Start by using a quality cleanser, exfoliator and pre-shave oil.
It’s no secret that beards can be a little high maintenance. Exposure to the elements can trap germs and daily face washing can strip the beard’s bristles of their natural protective cuticle.
The good news is that there are a variety of safe ingredients and products out there that can keep men’s beards neat, clean, and bacteria-free.
Let me introduce you to Tea Tree Oil. This oil is made from the leaves of the tea tree (melaleuca alternifolia), which is native to Australia. It is, perhaps, most well known for its antiseptic properties, making it a powerful tool for killing off bacteria and fungi. This quality in particular makes it useful for cleansing and maintaining the health of beard hair follicles. It is also well known for combating the impurities that cause “beardruff” – or dandruff for your beard (Did someone say: yuck!?). This is why tea tree oil is a common ingredient found in beard oils and facial hair grooming products on the market.
To make your own natural Tea Tree beard oil, you should first look for 100% organic Tea Tree Oil and always dilute it with a carrier oil (such as coconut or sweet almond oil) in a 1:1 ratio before applying it directly to skin.
Coconut oil also has its own long list of benefits for skin and immunity, so these two together make an even better combination. Sweet almond oil keeps inflammation at bay, which particularly helps prevent in-grown hair.
If you prefer to use a product that’s already been designed to apply directly to the skin, there are options out there. For example, the blend of 100% organic sweet almond oil, sunflower oil, rose hip oil, frankincense, tea tree, and lavender oils is what makes our Tough As Nails Skin Treatment one of our most versatile and popular products for moms and dads alike.
